Environmental information for construction products
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) communicate quantified environmental information based on Life Cycle Assessment and applicable product category rules. They can support comparisons and specification decisions, provided the declarations are comparable and used within their stated boundaries.
What is the Eco Portal?
The ECO Platform's Eco Portal provides an access point to digital EPD information for construction products from different programme operators. It is particularly relevant when searching for declarations in the European context.
The portal's coverage should not be mistaken for an exhaustive global catalogue. For products from other regions, users may need to consult programme operators and their own registers directly. In Brazil, for example, national sources and applicable programmes should also be checked.
How to use declarations
When searching for an EPD, check that the product and declared unit match the intended application. Review the product category rules, life-cycle scope, validity, geographical region, technology and programme operator. For product comparisons, also make sure the declarations use compatible rules and modules.
An EPD is not, by itself, a label proving that a product is environmentally superior. It is a standardised source of information that must be interpreted in the context of the decision and alongside other technical and functional requirements.
