The role of LCA in the B Impact Assessment

LCA can provide environmental evidence for company assessments, but it does not replace social and governance evaluation.

The role of LCA in the B Impact Assessment

The B Impact Assessment, developed by B Lab, is a tool for evaluating a company across several impact areas, including workers, community, environment, customers and governance. ACV Brasil’s 2020 material examined how environmental studies could contribute evidence to selected assessment questions.

Life Cycle Assessment can support the evaluation of product and service impacts across value chains. Carbon or water footprint studies can also provide useful quantitative information, provided their boundaries, methods, data and assumptions are appropriate to the question being assessed.

This contribution should not be confused with a guarantee of certification or a particular score. The tool and its criteria can change, and LCA addresses only part of a broader assessment. Companies should consult B Lab’s current methodology and requirements and use studies that are transparent, verifiable and relevant to their operations.
